South Australia Launches Independent Inquiry into SkyCity Casino Operations

The South Australian Liquor and Gaming Commission (OLGC) has initiated a process to gather public feedback as part of its independent inquiry into SkyCity Entertainment Group and its land-based casino operations within the state.

The OLGC declared earlier this month that it would be examining the operator and its SkyCity Adelaide casino establishment, following similar investigations into land-based casino activities in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, and Queensland.

Crown Resorts was judged unfit to manage casinos in New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia, while Star Entertainment Group is currently being scrutinized in New South Wales and Queensland.

The OLGC stated when commencing its independent investigation that many of the concerns raised in other reviews outside the state “extended beyond any single organization” and indicated broader systemic issues within the casino sector.

To aid this, the industry, interested parties, and the broader public have been invited to share their perspectives, with the OLGC emphasizing that it is seeking input from anyone who may possess information pertinent to the review.

The state of South Australia has selected a former Supreme Court Justice, Brian Martin AO QC, to conduct an examination. This review will determine if SkyCity remains qualified to retain its casino license.

“Mr. Martin is a highly regarded figure in the legal field,” stated OLGC Commissioner Dini Soulio. “He has previously undertaken assessments of crucial criminal justice policies within South Australia. These include reforms to the management of serious indictable offenses and the state’s system for reducing sentences.

“I am certain that he will produce a report that will contribute to our efforts in ensuring that South Australians have faith in the operations of the Adelaide casino.”
