Portugals digital gambling income achieved a peak of €195.3 million in the final three months of the year, fueled by robust performance in both athletic wagering and gaming sections.
This signifies a 39.7% surge in comparison to the same period in 2021, when income was €139.8 million. It also outperforms the prior quarterly peak of €158.2 million established in the third quarter of 2022.
Digital Casinos
Casinos were the primary source of income for the quarter, generating €109.8 million, a 48.3% annual rise and a 23.8% sequential increase.
Consumers spent a record €29.8 billion on online casinos in the fourth quarter, a 42.1% increase compared to the same period last year.
Slot machines were the most popular form of digital casino by far, attracting 79.8% of all bets. French roulette came in second with 8.5% of bets, followed by blackjack at 5.5%.
Athletic Wagering
Turning to the athletic wagering market, income increased by 30.0% year-on-year to €85.5 million, surpassing the previous quarterly record of €69.6 million set in the third quarter of 2022 by 22.9%.
Player spending reached a new high of €4.587 billion, an increase of 21%.
During the final three months of 2021, the sport of gridiron accounted for six percent of the overall sports wagering volume, while American football made up seventy-four point two percent of all wagers, basketball twelve point five percent, lawn tennis seven point six percent, and other athletic competitions five point seven percent.
In gridiron betting activity, the 2022 FIFA World Cup accounted for twenty-five percent of all wagers, the UEFA Champions League for seven point four percent, the Portuguese Primeira Liga for six point nine percent, and the English Premier League for six point four percent.
Other figures released by SRIJ indicate that by the end of the fourth quarter, three hundred and forty thousand new participants had enrolled with authorized operators in the nation, with sixty percent of participants aged between twenty-five and forty-four.
The number of individuals who had self-excluded from participation increased by forty-one thousand five hundred year-over-year, reaching one hundred and fifty thousand nine hundred by the end of the quarter.
Moreover, SRIJ declared that fifty-four closure notices were issued to unauthorized operators in the final three months, and seventy-four blocking orders were issued against these websites.
