A major European lottery corporation, Allwyn, has ambitions to secure the operation of the UK National Lottery. In a strategic maneuver, they’ve revealed plans to install Justin King, the renowned former head of Sainsbury’s, as the Chair of their UK branch. There’s a condition, however – King’s placement depends entirely on Allwyn securing the sought-after license.
Basically, it’s a certainty if Allwyn receives approval from the Gambling Commission, clearing the path for King to take over from the incumbent operator, Camelot. King is familiar with Allwyn, having contributed to their advisory council and playing a crucial part in crafting their bid for the National Lottery.
Sir Keith Mills, who heads Allwyn’s bid, emphasized King’s remarkable history of overhauling substantial companies, specifically his effective rejuvenation of Sainsbury’s during his tenure as CEO. This background in the UK retail arena is viewed as a significant advantage for the National Lottery’s extensive retail system.
Mills stressed King’s profound comprehension of the UK retail environment and his enthusiasm for invigorating town centers, believing this would be highly beneficial to the National Lottery. He perceives the prospective appointment as a logical step, capitalizing on King’s abilities and strengthening Allwyn’s proposal.
Allwyns Chief Executive, Robert Chvátal, conveyed his delight, remarking, “The addition of Justin and his colleagues to Allwyn fills us with excitement. Their proficiency will be indispensable as we navigate the shift to becoming the custodian of The National Lottery.”
Echoing the sentiment, King expressed his eagerness to join Allwyn. “Allwyn possesses an admirable history of elevating lotteries. We are equipped with a collective of international sector specialists and the backing of Allwyn’s extensive European lottery framework. Assuming the helm of Allwyn as it takes on the operation of The National Lottery fills me with pride, as does the opportunity to contribute to guiding this significant establishment into a fresh chapter.”
