The obstacle? Arriving at an agreement on the specifics of the legislation has proven to be a massive undertaking. Everyone desires a portion of the winnings, and that encompasses influential entities like Native American tribes, the California equine racing sector, and even international internet poker behemoths like PokerStars.
Even a concession where racetracks consented to withdraw from online poker in return for a substantial yearly payment wasn’t sufficient to advance matters. Until the diverse stakeholders can discover common ground, it appears California poker enthusiasts will have to be satisfied with the cards they’re given – in person.
Indigenous Californian communities have expressed resistance towards PokerStars joining the state’s internet poker industry. They contend that the company’s involvement would negatively impact their existing gaming operations, such as gambling establishments and other enterprises.
This dispute has created a substantial hurdle in the ongoing attempts to legitimize and oversee online poker in California. Although discussions haven’t entirely dissolved, it appears progressively improbable that any advancements will occur this year. Legislators are recognizing the requirement for additional time and dialogue to alleviate the tribes’ apprehensions, delaying any potential resolutions until the subsequent legislative period.
