A court in Sweden has lowered the punishment given to a branch of the internet betting firm, Kindred Group.
The offshoot, Spooniker, was initially ordered to pay SEK 100 million (roughly US$9.5 million) back in 2020 for breaking Swedish rules on promotional offers. The Swedish gaming regulator (SGA) argued that certain Spooniker campaigns should have been categorized as bonuses according to the law. Kindred disputed this understanding but modified its offerings to align with the SGA’s perspective.
Kindred challenged the SGA’s ruling in court, requesting clearer directions on interpreting the updated gaming legislation. The court first decreased the penalty to SEK 50 million. Recently, the court further diminished the fine to SEK 30 million.
Although achieving this partial win, Kindred still contends that the regulations lack clarity and are subject to interpretation. The company believes the penalty should be completely revoked.
At the beginning of the month, officials in China declared a pair of fresh measures designed to tackle game manipulation and illicit wagering in an effort to enhance the reputation of competitive athletics.
